New dad Jay Hampson’s labour of love has seen him crowned joking champion of Chesterfield.
Beating off 11 contenders, he won the annual Crooked Smile comedy award in front of a sell-out audience at the Winding Wheel last night.
Jay said: “I am buzzing. Winning makes all the effort worthwhile.”
The 28-year-old employment advisor won over six judges with his intelligent material and pacy delivery. He said: “The whole point of my act is that it is language driven with lots of elongated sentences - it is all about tempo.”
Victory earned him his first trophy, as well as a contract of paid gigs and £100.
Overjoyed Jay, who lives in Manchester, was hoping to grab a couple of hours’ sleep this morning before getting up to feed his eight-week-old daughter Poppy May at 3.30am.
*Chesterfield College tutor Marshall Anderson was the highest placed local contestant, winning tickets for future shows staged by the Spotlight Comedy Club at the Winding Wheel.
