A former daredevil living in a caravan is the lead character in Hasland Theatre Company’s final play of the season which opens this week.
The comedy Jerusalem, by Jez Butterworth, stars Steve Cowley as Johnny Byron. Council officials want to serve Johnny an eviction notice, a thug wants to give him a kicking and mates want his supply of drugs and alcohol.
Steve said: “Finding your way round thecountryman and storyteller that is Johnny is a daunting task. If he was a motorcycling daredevil, we had to think about hisphysicality The limp (which he maybe tries to disguise as an arrogant strut) is something that we introduced early on.”
Nicky Beards, director, said: “One of Jerusalem’s most affecting qualities is its stirring senseof place. Modern-day rural England in all its glory.”
Jerusalem is at Hasland Playhouse from May 20 to 28 at 7.30pm. Tickets £7.50. Call 01246 272271 or www. haslandtheatrecompany.co.uk
