Cider with Rosie, Laurie Lee’s memoir of childhood in a remote Cotswold village between the wars, is one of the best-loved coming of age novels.

Published in 1959, it has sold over six million copies worldwide and to celebrate the author’s centenary, Hope Amateur Dramatic Independent Theatre (HADIT) are in rehearsals for the stage adaptation.

The strength of the original is Lee’s rich, lyrical language could have been lost in a stage play, but has been overcome by skilful use of the narrator, an older Laurie, always present, looking back and speaking Lee’s words.

The other mainstay of the production, as in the book, is the scatty, garrulous and emotional Ma. Young Laurie and all the other children are played by adults, while the cast also portray a range of memorable characters.

Performances are at Hope Methodist Hall, Edale Road on December4 and 5 at 7.30pm. Tickets £7 , available from Hope Post Office. To book, call 01433 620665.
