What do the following have in common? Jimmy Carr, Katherine Ryan, Patrick Monaghan, Jason Manford, John Bishop, Ed Byrne, Jimeoin and Chris Ramsey.
They’re all comedians at the top of their game who are choosing to visit Chesterfield to entertain audiences large and small.
Chris Ramsey is the latest stand-up to announce a gig in the region – he’s headlining an intimate gig at Real Time Live on Marsden Street at one of its quarterly Stagedive Comedy Club events on November 13.
With his star most firmly in its ascendance, Chris is a familiar face to regular viewers of Celebrity Juice on ITV2. He’s also hosted E4 panel show Virtually Famous as well as I’m a Celebrity: Extra Camp.
His warm, engaging humour resulted in his own show The Chris Ramsey Show earlier this year, and also makes him the ideal host for Comedy Central’s Stand Up Central show – currently broadcast on Wednesdays at 10pm.
And having toured the UK with his show All Growed Up in 2017, Chris recently played his biggest ever gig at the Metro Arena in his hometown, Newcastle.
So what makes a top comedian choose to come to a small town in Derbyshire?
Recent visitors have attempted to explain this during their acts.
Jimmy Carr has visited several times to try out new material for his Arena tours, saying it was important to him to see people’s faces as he worked out which jokes would be funny and which would bomb – and stated that he could rely on Chesterfield folk for instant feedback!
John Bishop and Jason Manford have also recently used Chesterfield as a practice run for their upcoming nationwide tours. Both are northern based, so location may play a part as they can drive home after the gig. But we prefer to think they just like the blunt honesty of a Chesterfield crowd!
Stagedive Comedy Club compere Jared Shooter explains how the Chris Ramsey gig came about: “The UK comedy circuit is a supportive community, and one I’ve been lucky to be a small part of for the last few years.
“I’ve made a lot of friends on the circuit – one of whom, Carl Hutchinson, has been supporting Chris Ramsey on his recent tour. Carl asked Chris if he’d be interested in headlining at our next Stagedive event and he immediately offered his support. It’s really motivating when someone who’s made a career out of comedy can still take time to help lesser known acts gain exposure – and it’s very exciting that the gig will be in our hometown at such a fantastic venue.
“The evening is going to be very special for me on a personal level; seeing Chris perform stand-up is one of the reasons I decided to become a comedian myself, so to share the stage with him by compering the event will be a highlight of my career to date!”
