Rock powerhouse Girlschool tick all the boxes at Chesterfield's Real Time Live

Girlschool have been going for more than 40 years and were the most successful female band of the new wave of British heavy metal movement. Their contemporaries included Iron Maiden, Saxon, Diamond Head, Saxon, Def Leppard and Motorhead.

The band has had numerous personnel changes over the years. The current line-up are founder members Kim McAuliffe (rhythm guitar/lead vocals), Denise Dufort (drums), Tracey Lamb (bass/vocals) and Jackie (Jax) Chambers (lead guitar/vocals).

Performing at Real Time Live in Chesterfield, Girlschool showed that they are a well-rehearsed and tight unit who clearly love playing together and living for the road. The banter between band members and the crowd was plentiful and often witty.

Chambers took the lead and delivered a master class when it came to encouraging audience participation, leading clapping and singing along. At one point she grabbed her mic stand, thrusting the microphone into the audience and had fans singing the chorus to Nothing To Lose, those who did were very enthusiastic!

The set spanned the band’s whole career, including first ever single Take It All Way which saw McAuliffe introducing the song by joking that some members of the crowd weren’t even born when it was released.

Two covers were played, Bomber, which McAuliffe dedicated to the classic line-up of Motorhead, and a stunning version of Tush.

Choice cuts of the night for me were C’mon Let’s Go, Demolition Boys, Guilty As Sin, Kick It Down, Race With The Devil and Emergency.

Girlschool are very entertaining and delivered a fantastic set. The show was flawless.

The support band, Evyltyde played a great set to warm up the crowd and are worth checking out.

In the words of Kim McAuliffe ‘Cheers you lot’ for a great night.
