Spire Boxing Academy fighter Nathan Whitehead missed out on a Derbyshire Light Middleweight title when he took on John Pickering at Queen’s Park Leisure Centre.
The Spire fighter gave a good account of himself but was defeated on points by Buxton battler Pickering over three action-packed rounds.
Spire head coach Robbie Sivyer has no complaints about the outcome.
He said: “It did not work out as Nathan wanted but Pickering is a much more experienced fighter, he’s had three times as many fights as Nathan.
“It was a narrow decision but it was fair and square. Pickering knew a bit too much for him.’’
Queen’s Park was packed to the rafters for Sunday’s fight night which also brought about a defeat for Spire’s Kristian Davey.
He lost on points to Hillsborough ABC’s Zane Clarke.
Sivyer said: “Kris had a great first round but ran out of steam. He hadn’t put the training in. We call it end of season burn out.’’
However, fight fans did see a good win for Rod Smith in his 88th and final fight as an amateur before he joins the professional ranks.
Smith defeated Lincoln’s Nathan Decastro on points.
