Wain hits a treble as Matlock secure crucial win over Olton

Matlock’s firsts needed points and got them in style with a 4-1 win over Olton seconds on Saturday.

Olton are struggling at the bottom of the league but had recently managed to score two goals past Birmingham Uni who are sitting in second position in the league therefore complacently from the Matlock squad couldn’t be afforded.

After a slow start, Matlock ’s 1st goal came from a great pass by Laura Boddy, touched on by Leyanne Beacham to Sarah Archer who drew the keeper and unselfishly passed to Sarah Wain who hit the back of the goal.

Matlock dug in and momentum started to pick up. The second goal came from a well-executed short corner. Rachel Moore found Archer who in turn found Sarah Wain on the right hand post to fire home.

Olton fought on gaining some short corners but failing to hit the back of the net.

Matlock’s third goal came from a series of passes down the left hand side, before Archer managed to create space to hit the ball from the top of the D into the back of the net.

Olton had a personnel change at half-time and put their two National League players up front and they soon pulled a goal back via a deflection off captain Jody Carson which beat keeper Alison Millyard.

Temperatures started to rise on the pitch and a wild tackle from Iris Kelclova saw Matlock down to ten women, but they battened down the hatches and defended well.

Kleclova soon returned to pitch and Matlock continued to push on but saw numerous goalscoring opportunities wasted.

The final goal arrived courtesy of another Archer penalty corner which found Wain who completed her hat-trick.

Despite Wain’s three goals, player of the match went to Sarah Archer for her relentless work rate, passing vision and a fine goal.

Despite the scoreline this was a fairly even encounter that saw Ashbourne take their chances.

Ashbourne’s defence was resolute throughout and Matlock hit the post twice in the early stages.

Evie Donnelly dominated the midfield with Jenny Sunderland and Anna Boylin supporting well.

The solid defence of Rae Hunt , Dodds, Hollie Maycock, Fleur Rhodes and goalkeeper Muse worked hard but Ashbourne managed to penetrate this defending line up to score five goals.

Forwards Sally Bradbury, Cerys Heap, Sophie Boulton and Helen Greer battled hard and eventually Greer was able to score the only Matlock goal.

Hollie Maycock was voted man of the match.
