Chesterfield Lawn Tennis Club’s finals day featured two compelling singles matches in which youth was pitched against experience and produced different results.
In the men’s singles final, 14-year-old tennis high flyer, Bradley Buckland, took on the seasoned Jonny Davis. Davis was conceding almost a quarter of a century in years to his teenage opponent. The match was characterised throughout by some excellent ball striking from the back of the court by both players.
A 6-1 score in the first set to Buckland did not really do justice to Davis’s effort and commitment. In the high level exchanges during a tense second set the teenager was always able to produce a telling shot when it most mattered and won it in the end 6-4, retaining the title which he won for the first time last year.
In the ladies final, 19-year-old Mary Langen played the very experienced and current title holder Amy Harris. In an entertaining three set contest lasting two-and-a-half hours, Harris’s tenacity and court craft proved crucial in her emerging victorious 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 over her younger opponent.
Garvin Harris and Duncan Nimmo struck a further blow for the more experienced competitors, winning the men’s doubles final 6-2, 6-3 against the much younger pairing of Johnny Brook and Bradley Buckland.
Tori Head and Mary Langen defeated Jackie Gardener and Amy Harris 7-6, 6-4 in the women’s doubles final.
The mixed doubles final featured another clash of youth versus experience and in this instance the youngsters were victorious with Ryan Spragg and Mary Langen overcoming Garvin and Amy Harris by 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in three close sets.
