Liam Pitchford was unfortunate to run into top-20 player Marcos Freitas in top form at the German Open.
Pitchford, who recently beat world No 10 Wong Chun Ting in a Champions League match for his club Hennebont, made a good start to the competition, making it through his group with a 4-2 victory over young German Tobias Hippler and a 4-1 win against world No 104 Lam Siu Hang of Hong Kong.
He then defeated Sweden’s Jon Persson, ranked 105, 4-1 (12-10, 5-11, 11-9, 11-2, 11-9) in the first preliminary round.
But the Chesterfield athlete was drawn against world No 17 Freitas of Portugal in the final preliminary round, with a place in the last 32 at stake, and his opponent was in no mood to offer him a foothold as he prevailed 4-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-9, 11-4).
Pitchford, currently ranked 58 in the world, moves on to the Swedish Open next week.
