Delighted Dronfield RUFC have been crowned champions of the Midlands 2 East (North) division of the National League.
Dronfield’s success is a triumph for the coaching prowess of former Yorkshire, Sheffield Tigers and Rotherham player Richard Selkirk, who only arrived at the club at the end of last season.
At the time, they were embroiled in a relegation battle. But Selkirk has turned the club’s fortunes around to such an extent that they won 17 of their 22 league matches this term.
Captained by Hugo Ross, Dronfield clinched the title with a 25-15 victory at Southwell in their last match of the campaign. It enabled them to hold on to top spot by the skin of their teeth from runners-up West Bridgford, who finished on the same number of points. The pair were four points clear of third-placed Ashbourne.
Promotion means that Selkirk’s troops return to the Midlands 1 division of the league for the first time since 1993.
