The Reds had led through Tom Platt’s sixth-minute shot from 25 yards that somehow found a way through a forest of legs in the Southport box, but it was not until the visitors had levelled matters with just 15 minutes remaining that they really knuckled down to business.

Ironically the Sandgrounders’ goal came in similar fashion, with Elliot Osborne’s angled free-kick creeping inside the back post, but 26 minutes earlier they were denied a goal by Sam Ramsbottom’s brilliant save from a Jack Sampson penalty after former Reds’ defender Billy Priestley had been tripped in the area.

With a further twist of irony, Priestley brought down Richard Peniket as he ran on to a through-ball from James Clifton for Alfreton’s third goal on 89 minutes, with Bobby Johnson sending keeper Daniel Hanford the wrong way from the spot, Tom Denton having regained their lead in the 79th-minute by side-footing home Callum Chettle’s astute cross.
