Buxton struggled throughout the game, giving away possession on numerous occasions, the first of which led to Prenton’s first try.

The hosts then piled the pressure on Buxton and capitalised by running in two more tries before the break.

The second half proved to be a different game, and although Buxton showed glimpses of good offloading skills, Prenton’s defence held firm.

In the final 10 minutes the hosts ran in a fourth and final try of the afternoon.

• Buxton’s seconds recorded a 24-10 win over Wilmslow at home last weekend, despite having to come from behind.

The hosts made a slow start and when they did gain possession in the visitors’ half, they were frustrated by resolute defending.

In stark contrast Wilmslow were camped in Buxton’s 22-yard line for the first 30 minutes and despite some great defending, they managed to score two unconverted tries giving them a 10-0 lead which they took into the half-time interval.

The second half saw a strong start for Buxton when Tommy McGuigan side-stepped the opposition to run in a 30-yard try, followed by a conversion.

Some stubborn defensive work from Tom Edge then kept Wilmslow at bay before the hosts’ James Cotton ran in under the posts twice in quick succession to turn the game on its head and give Buxton the lead.

Both tries were duly converted before McGuigan added a late penalty kick to put the icing on a terrific turnaround performance.
