More glory as Chargers U13s win league title

After promotion last year, the North Derbyshire Chargers U13s have clinched further glory by winning the Yorkshire Junior League Division Three title.

This is the second time Chargers have secured a Yorkshire Junior League title since 2011.

The start of the new season saw the U13s finding their feet in the new division.

Having finished third in the previous season the squad were realistic in their expectations and saw this new season as one of consolidation.

However, having lost their first fixture, the squad bounced back with a convincing win in their first home game and never looked back, recording wins over teams that had finished above them the previous season, but with a handful of close and hard-won victories against well established clubs.

A close game against Beeston Broncos in the semi-final of the U13s Continuation Cup saw the squad miss out on the opportunity to play in the final at Featherstone Rovers, but left the team free to concentrate on the league.

A number of good wins, despite injuries, and a number of results going in their favour, saw Chargers enter the end of the season needing to win all of the remaining fixtures to keep pressure on Stanningley – who put in performance after performance to keep extending their lead only for Chargers to claw back the deficit.

With the end of the season in sight, the U13s recorded 50+ points for the final three games of the season, to pip Stanninley by two points.

Other accolades followed with U13s Head Coach, Ashley Rennison, picking up Community Coach of the Year award at the Bolsover District Council Sports Awards and Outstanding Contribution to Schools Rugby League Award for the Midlands Region in the 2016 English Schools Rugby League Awards.

The success of the U13s this season is a result of the commitment of the players, the coaching/management team, the club and other key partners who have assisted the North Derbyshire Chargers on their journey.

The squad are already recruiting for next season and the club will shortly begin a drive to establish add an U12s squad in the Yorkshire Junior League in 2017 and are also investing heavily in the development of girls’ Rugby League in the area with a view to establishing a competitive squad once numbers allow.
