Robbie’s gym with a pulse

Robbie Sivyer runs what he calls a gym with a pulse.

And the former professional fighter, who is head coach at Spire Boxing Academy, says his doors are open to all people - from youngsters to pensioners - who want to improve their fitness.

Chesterfield-based Sivyer said: “The Academy is not just a boxing gym, it provides fitness for all. It is a friendly and approachable place.’’

Based at Thompson Street, Whittington, the venue has recently been given a £20,000-plus face lift which has given it a massive shot in the arm.

National Lottery’s Sport England and Derbyshire County Council have stumped up the cash to provide new punch bags and boxing equipment, new shower and changing areas for men and women, and brightly coloured safety flooring.

In addition, the gym has been given a striking revamp by Urban Canvas who have painted images of iconic boxing heroes, including Muhammad Ali, on the walls.

The makeover has delighted Robbie, who wants to attract increasing numbers of people to his establishment.

He said: “It is the best gym I’ve seen and I’m really proud of it.

“It is now up to me and my coaches to ensure we keep young people involved in lawful sporting activities, reducing anti-social behaviour while battling obesity and continuing to produce talented boxers and athletes to represent our town and county.’’

Robbie has 24 years of boxing experience and during his pro days - between 1993 and 2002 - he won 12 of his 20 bouts, including three knock-outs, and he is keen to hone the skills and ring craft of up and coming fighters.

However, the gym has annual running costs of £10,000, so Robbie is keen to widen his net and attract different customers.

In addition to working with would-be pugilists, special classes for women are held by Julia Sivyer, Robbie’s wife, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings.

And every day, Robbie’s self-styled Spire Boxing Sessions take place with circuit training and pad work.

In addition Robbie offers one-on-one personal training to help people boost their levels of fitness and lose weight.

He said: “It is common knowledge that boxing training is the best calorie burning, muscle building training regime out there.

“I absolutely guarantee fantastic results.

“I insist on a friendly and respectful atmosphere to ensure new recruits of all ages feel unintimidated.’’
