Promotion hopes ended as Chesterfield lose to Telford

A Damian Jarzembowski hat-trick was not enough as Chesterfield's promotion hopes were ended following a 4-3 defeat at Telford.

The away side have now taken just five points from their last six games to leave any lingering promotion hopes dead in the water.

Player-coach Ben Lamb said: “We shouldn’t be too down on ourselves, we had to put a squad together very quickly over the summer whereas guys like Telford have been together a good few years.

“The fact we challenged at all this season bodes well for the future. We’ve still got 4-5 games left so it’s important we re-focus and finish strongly”.

It was a case of déjà vu for Chesterfield as they capitulated yet again from a winning position.

The Derbyshire side have taken the lead in every one of the last six matches but picked up only one win in that time.

The visitors started brightly as Dan Molloy and the ever dangerous Jarzembowski proved too much for the Telford defence to handle.

It was no surprise when the Polish international got in front of his man to open the scoring with an excellent finish high into the net.

Familiar failings soon resurfaced however as Chesterfield surrendered the lead cheaply after several weak challenges at the top of the circle allowed Telford to level the scores.

Chesterfield were dealt a further blow in the first when captain Christian Battye was forced off with a back injury which will almost certainly rule him out of the next game.

The second half saw Telford assert themselves on an increasingly chaotic game. Both sides had players in the sin bin but it was Telford that coped best out of the two, with Chesterfield losing their way somewhat.

Two goals in quick succession gave Telford a 3-1 lead before Jarzembowski’s powerful shot across the ‘keeper made it 3-2.

The hosts quickly responded with a fourth that looked to have killed the game off. Jarzembowksi had other ideas though as he latched onto a through ball, rounded the keeper and fired a back hand shot into the net to make it 4-3.

A tense final five minutes saw Chesterfield hurl everything at the game but to no avail as Telford hung on for all three points.
