Povey up for county gong

The shooter and fellow Team England members Adam Peaty, Liam Pitchford, Caroline Povey and Will Sharman all climbed the rostrum in Glasgow and now make up the final shortlist in the University of Derby Sportsperson of the Year Award.

Derbyshire Institute of Sport athlete Povey shot to fame in July when she clinched a bronze medal in the Olympic Trap Clay event.

The 34-year-old has raised around £12,000 to help fund her sporting passion, which has enabled her to claim other excellent results, such as a tenth place finish at the World Cup in Kazakhstan and joint ninth place at the World Championships in Spain.

“To be considered among the top sports people in Derbyshire is a huge honour – being shortlisted is a massive achievement – so if I were to go on and win it would be amazing,” said Caroline.

“There are so many amazing sports people within Derbyshire, not just those who got to go to the Commonwealth Games, but also in other sports that aren’t in it, so I’m very proud.”

Caroline is among the shortlisted athletes, clubs, coaches and volunteers revealed across the final eight categories ahead of the Awards night at The Roundhouse, Derby on November 6. The first five categories were revealed last week.

Vice-Chancellor Professor John Coyne, of title sponsors the University of Derby, said: “It’s been another year of sporting excellence across Derbyshire and it’s great to see these awards honour in unison inspirational athletes, coaches, volunteers, clubs and organisations from grass roots through to elite level.”

Event organisers Derbyshire Sport resurrected the awards in 2006 in recognition of the importance of paying tribute to the wealth of sporting talent in the county.

District awards ceremonies have been held across the county, with winners from each district going forward to be considered for the Derbyshire Sports Awards.

Cllr Paul Smith, chairman of Derbyshire Sport, said: “There’s been some superb success stories across the county that have come to light during the 2014 Derbyshire Sports Awards process, and every nominee who has made the final shortlist has done fantastically well.”
