Penny shines brightly in Queen’s Park 5k

North Derbyshire Running Club’s Steve Penny won August’s No Walk in the Park 5k around Queen’s Park in Chesterfield.

The monthly meet, organised by NDRC, attracted plenty of competitors and finished with a club one, two on the finishers’ podium.

Penny crossed the line in 17 minutes and 15 seconds ahead of club mate Paul Sorrell (17:48) and Rotherham Harrier John Comrie (18:08) in third.

Helen Mort (19:10) was the ladies winner for 11th place overall with Sally Brailsford and Cris Sillito, both North Derbyshire, second and third.

While Matlock Athletics Club also had a strong turnout with Jim Thorneycroft (20:50) first back in 19th and second overall in the MV55s.

While no less than 86 runners took part in the Derbyshire Chevin on a hot night in early August - in a race which was 7.3k.

Leaving from the social club in Milford, the race was won by Matlock’s Ian Phillips in 27 minutes 59 seconds, followed by Ben Cartwright (pictured) hot on his heels in 28:20.

Dennis Holmes (36:03) came back in 31st and Mick Moorhouse, who hasn’t raced since he picked up a heel injury at Sheldon Fell Race three weeks ago, finished in 36:57.

Danielle Booth of Derby AC was first lady back in 33.38.

Almost half the 66-strong field were first-timers in the 13th Whitworth Thread on August 9 in sunny yet windy conditions.Josh Moody, former MAC runner, won in 18:39.
