Olympic champion’s praise for Buxton shooting star

A BUXTON teenager who has helped make a difference in her local community has been praised by Olympic legend Dame Kelly Holmes.

Buxton College student Hannah Davies was among 20 young people to take part in the Unlocking Potential mentoring programme, developed by education charity AQA and the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust.

The programme, which began in May, aimed to help unlock the potential of young people who had shown commitment and integrity in the face of challenging personal circumstances.

Hannah, who was nominated by one of her former teachers at St Thomas More School, teamed up with international hockey player Charlotte Hartley to organise a social inclusion project in her own sport, air rifle shooting. This culminated with students from the college’s Learning for Work and Life course attending a taster evening at 17th Buxton Scout Airgun Club in Fairfield.

To celebrate her participation on the programme, Hannah was presented with a certificate by Dame Kelly during a ceremony recently in central London.

Double Olympic champion Dame Kelly said: “It was my PE teacher who identified my talent and set me on the path to achieve my dream.

“She went the extra mile to ensure I had the chance to fulfil my potential, and that’s what the teachers of these young people, combined with the support of athletes from my charity, have done on the Unlocking Potential programme.”
