First win in debut Moto3 season for teenage rider Ogden

The 14-year-old Ogden took the opening race of the fourth round of the championship at the famous Brands Hatch circuit in Kent, and the Wilson team bagged another podium spot the following day when regining champion Max Cook marked his return to action as a wildcard entry.

Team owner Gary Wilson said: “Scott’s first Moto3 race victory was very well deserved. The youngster has put in a lot of effort, and it is a great reward for him and for the team.

“Max was also able to lift a trophy in race two, finishing third. We had a great spirit between the riders and their families which made the weekend’s racing a wonderful experience.

“Winning and podium places are obviously fantastic, but it is also pleasing to watch the progress the boys are making.”

At one stage in his race, Ogden was more than three seconds behind the leaders, but he stormed back in the second half of the contest to triumph by 0.055 seconds.

Of his teammates, Charlie Atkins came home in a safe sixth spot, Jack Hart finished 11th after setting a metronomic pace, Jake Clark was 12th, despite tiring late on, and rookie Osian Jones finished a fine 19th, beating his qualifying lap time by almost two seconds.

Clark deserved particular credit because he fell off during qualifying, and the Wilson team were rushed to get his bike fixed for the race.

Cook also looked set for a podium position, but crashed out when unable to avoid a fallen rival in front of him on lap nine. Fortunately, he was not injured and could take his place in race two on the Sunday.

He started sixth on the grid, but was among the leading group of three riders by the end of the first lap. He was then involved in 14 positions of constantly changing positions before crossing the line third. The first three riders were separated by just over a tenth of a second.

Ogden was a creditable fourth to follow up his exploits of the previous day, with Atkins seventh and Hart 12th after a battle royal with other six other rivals. Clark finished the race just outside the points in 16th place, while Jones cut another half a second of his best lap time as he continued to learn his trade aboard his Honda Moto3 machine.
