Matlock’s young and old sweep honours at cyclo-cross event

The second round of this year’s Notts and Derby Cyclo Cross League took place on Saturday at Fields Farm in Hilton.

Promoting club Team Empella put on a tough, technical course with sharp climbs. Matlock Cycling Club enjoyed success.

In the Under 9s’ race, MCC’s Louis Swindell was second to Otto Chilton of Derby Mercury. Teammate Holly Hoy won the girls’ Under 9s’ category, ahead of teammate Harriet Limb.

The high finishes continued in the Under 12s’ race with Amelie Wayte taking second in the girls’ section. Wayte, winner of the first round at Hardwick Hall, came in 30 seconds down on Ava Oxley of KCA Race Team. MCC’s Sarah Briggs finished on the podium in girls’ Under 12s’ race.

In the Youth race, MCC’s Will Gascoyne came second behind Josh Waters of Sherwood Pines Race Team. Cameron Orr, moving up in to the Under 16s’ category, finished in sixth.

Matlock’s John Webster won in the Under 14 boys’ category. In the girls Under 14s’ race, MCC’s Ellie Smith was pipped to the line by Poppy Wildman of Nottingham Clarion.

MCC’s Chris Green was third in the Veteran 45s’ category, won by Zepnat RT’s Jonathan Marshall. Green’s 16 year-old son Arthur finished tenth in the seniors’ race. Lee Shunburne of Fossa Racing Team finished seventh, with victory going to Dan Booth of Hope Factory Racing. As part of Peak District Cycling Festival, MCC organised a timed skills test on Sunday at the Thornbridge Outdoors Centre, Great Longstone. Max Walling of Leicester was fastest. James Fellottini from Sheffield was second and MCC’s Sam Gould was third.
