Matlock can’t follow up win as Marehay prevail

Action from Marehay against Matlock (batting) on Saturday as the home side won by seven wickets.

Marehay skipper Richard wood played with Matlock captain Ed Lander, and several of the young Matlock side, throughout age group cricket but they would now be on opposing sides as the visitors looked to follow up their win over Alfreton the previous week.

Wood won the toss and chose to bowl and the decision paid off immediately with Jonathan Ford leaving the left hander’s first delivery that clipped the top of his off stump.

Mark Burton was then trapped in front before Rob Lowe also offered no shot and was adjudged lbw. Drew Mullaney also fell victim to Dean Mills who now had 4-10.

Dave Lander then came to the crease with new found confidence as he dismissed James Kyte’s bowling with several well-timed shots through mid-wicket.

When Ed Lowe (22) edged behind, Ed Lander joined his brother in the middle and began to form a good partnership, rebuilding after the poor start.

The Landers batted for a long period and managed to accumulate runs and ensure Matlock used their full 50 overs.

When Ed Lander eventually chipped one back to the bowler on 41, it was left to his brother to accelerate at the end of the innings. Dave Lander finished on 66 not out, his highest score at this level, as Matlock reached 155.

After tea Marehay made their intentions clear as opener Ben Gartside struck several straight sixes. The home side raced to 90, despite the best efforts of Chris Pemberton who found a good length on the quick wicket.

Gartside then holed out to Burton and Tom Carter, bowling for the first time at this level, managed to put together a fine spell in claiming 2-24.

Mullaney also bowled well but couldn’t prevent the home side reaching their target as they claimed victory in the 27th over.
