ALFRETON Town manager Nicky Law declared himself delighted with the way pre-season training has been going as the Reds step up their preparations for the new season.
Looking ahead to this Friday’s first pre-season outing against last season’s npower League Two champions Chesterfield at the Impact Arena, Law is already relishing getting the players onto the pitch.
Law, formerly player and manager with the Spireites, said: “The lads have come back really fit and things have been going very well during training.
“I am sure both sets of players will be looking forward to this Friday’s game and we will be assessing how our new squad gels together.”
The fixture against John Sheridan’s Chesterfield is a repeat of last season’s first run-out which ended in a very well contested 1-1 draw with the added attraction this time that both clubs won league titles last season.
Law added: “Both sets of fans and players will obviously want to win the game but too many people look at results in pre-season and get carried away. It’s not about results, it’s about getting fit.
“Hopefully it will be as good a game as last season and I just hope the supporters of both teams turn out in the numbers the players deserve.”
Law will certainly have plenty to digest from the game with six new players signed so far this summer and a couple of trialists are also expected to feature for Alfreton in the game.
The Reds boss landed his sixth new face last week with 6ft 4in central defender Adie Hawes making the short move from Eastwood Town for an undisclosed fee.
Hawes has been handed squad number 20 for the forthcoming Blue Square Premier Division campaign.
The rest of the squad numbers so far are: 1 Dan Lowson, 2 Josh Law, 3 Connor Franklin, 4 Theo Streete, 5 Greg Young, 6 Matt Wilson, 7 Anton Brown, 8 Jake Moult, 9 Paul Clayton, 10 Chris Senior, 11 Nathan Arnold, 12 Leigh Franks, 14 Jordan Hall, 15 Anthony Wilson, 16 Nathan Jarman, 17 Levi Mackin, 20 Adie Hawes.
Number 13 will not be used and numbers 18 and 19 are currently being reserved for additional goalkeepers.
Striker Anthony Wilson will miss the first few pre-season run-outs after having an operation to repair minor damage to a knee injury.
A second home pre-season game follows on Tuesday when Paul Peschisolido brings his Burton Albion side to the Impact Arena.
Kick-off for both the Chesterfield and Burton games is 7.45pm and admission prices are £8 for adults and £5 concessions for all of the Reds’ pre-season home fixtures.
