Lamb silences Coalville with super treble

A scintillating hat-trick from player-coach Ben Lamb inspired Chesterfield Hockey Club to victory against a lacklustre Coalville in Midlands Division Two.

Adam Bointon and Billy Fouflias also scored to make the final result 5-1 to the in-form North Derbyshire side who now sit firmly in the top half of the table.

Once again Chesterfield started with Lamb on the forward line, a set up they stumbled across out of necessity but one that is paying dividends as he continues to develop an effective partnership with Bointon.

Lamb went close to opening the scoring twice but wasn’t to be denied a third time as he ran onto a searching pass from Josh Brocklehurst before entering the circle to lob the ball high over the advancing keeper.

Chesterfield looked a constant threat on the break and, with pressure mounting, good work from Tasos Varsamidis led to a penalty corner. Although the initial shot was saved, Bointon reacted quickest to collect the rebound.

Lamb grabbed his second of the game against the run of play. Christian Battye’s clever reverse pass presented Lamb with the easiest of chances to slap the ball home.

Lamb completed his hat-trick five minutes later as he latched onto an Andy Hodgson through ball, smashing the ball first time into the far corner to leave the Coalville keeper rooted to the spot.

With the game all but over, Fouflias was able to add Chesterfield’s fifth from the flick spot after the Coalville keeper was sent off for upending Bointon.

Coalville did manage a consolation, but as the clock ran out the day belonged to Lamb and his Chesterfield side.

Chesterfield host Shrewsbury next Saturday.

After the match, Battye said: “That was another very, very good performance from the guys. Josh Brocklehurst and Jon Moores were superb at the back and the hat-trick from Ben is one of the best I’ve seen at any level.

“What we have to do now is keep this run going and maintain the standards we have set ourselves.”
