Chesterfield HC end season on a high

Chesterfield wrapped up their league campaign on Saturday with an impressive 4-2 home win against Solihull side Old Silhillians.

It meant the Derbyshire outfit ended the season in a respectable fourth place in Midlands Division 2.

Despite enjoying the majority of the play the home side initially struggled to break the deadlock, with a stubborn Patrick O’Malley in the Old Sils goal producing a string of excellent saves.

Chesterfield kept their cool however and took the lead through top scorer Adam Bointon, who angled home his 15th goal of the season.

Galvanised after going a goal down, the visitors struck back through Jamie Glynn, who shot low into the net past Matt Lloyd.

Parity was not to last however, as further pressure from the home side saw them retake the lead through a deflected Chris Battye strike.

Chesterfield reasserted themselves on the game in the second half, winning key battles in what was becoming an increasingly physical affair.

The ever reliable Jon Moores was on hand to score number three with a precise penalty corner strike that left O’Malley no chance.

Old Sils proved there was still fight in them when Tom Watson pulled a goal back to make it 3-2, but in truth the hosts always looked the more comfortable of the two sides.

Chris Cowley struck for the 11th time this season with a clever finish low into the net to ensure Chesterfield took all three points.

After the game, skipper Christian Battye said: “I’m delighted with everyone today, we created plenty of chances and if it wasn’t for their ‘keeper pulling off some great saves we’d have been out of sight in the first half.

“They made it tough for us in the second half but we remained disciplined and just kept going until we got the job done.

“The lads have worked really hard since Christmas and have been rewarded with a decent finish.

“We’ve already started planning for next season and aim to hit the ground running when the league gets going again”.

Next on the calendar for Chesterfield is the presentation evening at the Britannia Inn on Saturday 9th April.
