Hogg's pride at Team GB selection for Rio Paralympics

The 46-year-old is to represent Team GB later this summer having been named as one of the two athletes to compete in his category in Brazil.

And speaking before heading off to Holland for this week’s World Championships, where he took a sixth place finish, Hogg said: “It gives me great pleasure and an overwhelming sense of pride to finally announce that I’ve been selected to represent Great Britain at my first Paralympic Games in Rio.

“I’ve worked so hard and made so many sacrifices to achieve this.

“It’s been an amazing journey though with plenty of ups, downs, twists and turns along the way.”

The father of two was quick to share the achievement with those who have helped him to achieve his sporting dream.

“All of this would not have been possible though on my own,” he said.

“Thanks to each and everyone of you who have supported me on my way.”

One of the Team GB member’s biggest supporters is his father Mick, who is bursting with pride.

“Not many people get selected for the Olympic Games,” he said.

“He’s 46 years old, he’s not a young kid, it’s a big achievement.

“In his category two get selected from the whole of Great Britain and he’s one of them, it’s a massive achievement.”

Hogg was paralysed from the waist down in 1991 after suffering a spinal injury in an accident while he was competing in a cycling time trial event.

After excelling in wheelchair basketball he was introduced to paratriathlon three years ago and placed in the Great Britain Paratriathlon Talent Program for Rio 2016.

He was named British Triathlon Paratriathlete of the Year in 2013 and 2014 and has won European and British Championship gold.
