Only 24 hours after going down in a thriller against Telford and Wrekin, Chesterfield won 3-2 away to Solihull outfit Old Silhillians in the Second Division of the Midland Men’s League. And skipper Christian Battye, who missed the match because of injuury, was full of praise for Jarzembowski as he reached his milestone on one of his last games for the club before he leaves.

“To get to 50 goals is absolutely incredible,” said Battye. “He’s streets ahead of anyone in the entire region and has been a real find.

“It’s a shame that this coming weekend will be his last game because what he has done here has been unprecedented.

“Remember he’s only 20, so he has his best years ahead of him. I’m sure he’ll go out with a bang on Saturday.”

Chesterfield’s slump in form had seen them drop out of the title race and into fifth place in the table. In contrast, Old Silhillians were in the bottom five, so Battye was relieved to see his side grind out a much-needed victory to lift the gloom surrounding the club.

“I actually thought it was one of our best performances of the season,” said the skipper. “The match against Telford and Wrekin the previous day had been tough, so to watch the lads work as hard as they did against Old Sils was excellent. The guys should be proud of the shift they put in.”

As well as Jarzembowski, Ben Lamb and Michael Fearn were also on the scoresheet for Chesterfield, who led 3-1 at half-time before the home side tried hard to battle back.

The result leaves them in fifth, eight points behind leaders Stratford with four league games to play. They are six behind second-placed Stratford, five behind third-placed Telford and Wrekin and four behind fourth-placed Boots.

Battye’s team are hot favourites to win their next fixture, which is at home to bottom-of-the-table Shrewsbury at St Mary’s School on Saturday (1.30 pm start). Shrewsbury have lost 13 of their 18 league matches so far and have only eight points.

The following Saturday (March 11), Chesterfield travel to play next-to-bottom Leicester, and after that, they have matches away to Finchfield on Saturday, March 18, and finally at home to Streetly on Saturday, March 25.
