It was Cavendish Cup day for most teams in the Matlock and District League with 31 goals scored from the five games being played.
Shirebrook Rangers again put on a fine display booking their place in round two scoring eight goals past a struggling Kings Arms.
Woodthorpe Rovers travelled to Darley Dale and showed their intent for silverwear this season in a hard-fought but well deserved 5-2 win.
Scorers for Woodthorpe were Dave Whittford, Aaron Large and three for Ben Goodwin. Darley’s goals came form an own goal and one from Dean Concannon.
Chesterfield Town were at home this weekend to second division side Tansley who have had some good results of late but Chesterfield were too strong and ran out 3-0 winners.
Other Cavendish Cup games saw Codnor destroy afc Lea Holloway with an impressive 7-1 win and a 5-0 defeat for Wirksworth Albion against All Inn put them into round two.
Only one game took place in Division One and it was an attacking master-class from the resurgent Dale Hegarty kept up Shirland’s unbeaten home record and helped under-pressure boss Paul Hardy win over a few more of the fans.
Shirland overcame Miners Arms from Alfreton comfortably and it was the first time this season that manager Paul Hardy had a near full stregnth side to pick from, the partnership of Jamie Morgan and Dale Hegarty up front along with midfield masters Paul Holmes and Richard Harrison make Shirland serious contenders this season.
The final result of 5-2 to Shirland could have been much higher with a host of shots hitting the woodwork. Scorers for Shirland were J Morgan, P Holmes and a hat-trick for D Hegarty.
In division two Riddings Rovers fine display saw them climb into second place with a 7-0 win over Chesterfield Town Reserves.
Black Hippo were 4-2 winners against afc South Wingfield who are yet to find their feet in this league.
