Good batting not enough in last-over loss

Chesterfield CC were unable to continue their winning run when they were beaten off the penultimate ball of the match by Ockbrook and Borrowash CC at Queen's Park.

After being sent in to bat the home side posted 247–8, but were beaten by two very good innings.

Ockbrook batsmen Rahib Ali (105) and Jacob Connors (63 not out) guided the visitors side to a five-wicket win.

The Chesterfield openers did well to counter good bowling from Sam Conners and Gareth Young, with the first wicket going down at 58.

David Hunt (29) and Alex Hibbert (36) made good contributions before at 91–3 Andrew Parkin–Coates came in and played classic shots around the wicket, guiding his side to 245-8 before he was out for 57.

At the other end Harry Wilmott again took a bowling attack apart with aggressive batting.

He struck 34 off 27 balls, including six fours and a six.

At 212 -7 Parkin Coates was joined by young Luke Baddeley, who played with great maturity to make an unbeaten 25 at the close.

Mykylo Bird, who was at Chesterfield last year, opened the batting with Ali and put on 73.

Bird made 31 and at the halfway point the score was 90-2.

With Ockbrook needing 158 to win off 25 overs the game was looking like it would end in a draw until Conners came in at 131 -3 to join Ali.

Their stand of 82 saw both batsmen waiting for the bad ball to hit before Ali was out for an impressive 105.

Ockbrook still had it all to do to get a win, but fierce hitting from Jacob Conners (63 not out) saw them win with one ball to spare.

The Chesterfield bowlers struggled on a flat pitch but Kieron Garside steamed in to produce another skilful performance for his 3-45, despite carrying a niggling injury.
