Wilson tips Campbell-Ryce to become fans' favourite

Danny Wilson believes new recruit Jamal Campbell-Ryce has quickly endeared himself to Chesterfield supporters.

The man on loan at the Proact Stadium until the end of the season from Sheffield United scored within seconds of his Spireites debut on Saturday.

His goal salvaged a point for Wilson’s travelling Chesterfield at Scunthorpe United, cancelling out Paddy Madden’s opener for the home side.

And the Spireites boss was pleased in what he saw from second half substitute Campbell-Ryce, in a game he described as a “tale of two halves”.

“He’s settled in quickly, he’ll be a fans’ favourite straight away,” said Wilson.

“Jamal has come in for a reason, we’ve obviously had some strikers go in recent weeks, it was important we got some competition back in there. He can play both sides, he can play down the middle, he’s got a few strings to his bow.

“He’s got a good experience as well. He knows the positions to take up and he knows where to be. That back post area is where we encourage our wide men to be from the other side and he’s done that naturally.

“He’s going to be a good acquisition for us. You can see how quickly he can get us from back to front with his pace, it’s the same with Gboly (Ariyibi), we’ve got a real threat with them going forward.”

Wilson wasn’t happy with the first half showing from his players at Glanford Park but said they can take confidence from the last 45 minutes.

He said: “We weren’t in it first half. We weren’t at the races but we weren’t under a lot of pressure.

“Sometimes when you don’t get out of the blocks like we wanted to you can find yourself two or three goals behind and not being able to recover.

“But, thankfully, we didn’t do that. We kept it to the one. There were a lot of words exchanged at half time and I think in the second half we came out and showed what we’re really like - the true Chesterfield.

“And in the second half we controlled large parts. Maybe we were unlucky not to get the second goal.”

And added: “The lads are disappointed with their own performances. They knew there was a lot left in the locker. Scunthorpe had showed us everything they were about in the first half. They got around us well, they pressed well and they broke well at times but I didn’t think there was more to offer than that.

“We had a lot more to offer. We weren’t at the races in that respect and I thought second half we showed a lot more.”
