Wilson expecting more '˜silly' bids for Ariyibi

Danny Wilson is expecting more '˜silly' bids for winger Gboly Ariyibi and hoping the player is still a Spireite when the transfer window closes.

The Chesterfield boss, likely referencing a bid from his former employers Barnsley, said the club had rejected a ‘derogatory’ offer and none of the 21-year-old’s suitors had come close to Chesterfield’s valuation.

Should he stay, at least until January, it would be a big boost for Wilson.

The manager said: “We’ve had a couple of bids no where near the valuation and if that’s the case then long may that continue, so Gboly stays here and plays an integral part in some of the wins we’ll hopefully have in the near future.

“I’m expecting another silly bid, I’m sure there will be one or two more but if they’re anything like what we’ve had already that word silly covers everything.

“There would have to be a vast improvement on what was offered in the first place.”

Wilson believes the player is in no hurry to exit the Proact and that staying put might actually benefit the youngster.

“Gboly has been brilliant.

“He understands the position we’re in. He has a major part to play in hopefully getting towards the top end of the league.

“From what he’s said to myself and the chief exec, he’s in no rush to leave and if it’s January or it’s next season then it’s next season but he’s ready to play his heart out for the club and give us our best chance of winning games,” said Wilson.

“That’s music to my ears quite honestly. Gboly is very focused on what he needs to do. If something happens, it happens.

“If it is January or the end of the season he might have a lot more suitors than he has already.”

Although Wilson concedes that those upstairs at the Proact are keen to sell players on to bring in much needed revenue, he’s impressed with their resolve over Ariyibi.

“I’ve been quite bouyed by the stance of the club, they won’t just sell some of the better players for pittance and I think that’s what the fans want to hear as well,” he said.

“I’m sure the club might be banging their head against a brick wall because they want to bring some money in but you can’t force people to be sold, or force people to come and buy.”

But if Wilson’s worst case scenario arises, and Ariyibi departs on deadline day next week, he hopes he’ll at least have enough time to bring in a replacement or two.

“If we get this week out of the way then we have three or four months before January and there’s nothing to think about,” he said.

“But if it’s going to happen we’re going to need a bit of time to replace him, but that’s not always forthcoming.

“It would be nice if we got a tip off that something was going to happen.

“We’ve got one or two players in mind.”

Wilson’s only dealings in the transfer market are likely to be reactions to a departure, whether Ariyibi or someone else.

He added: “We’ve got nothing to bring anybody in with.

“I’d be loathe to let anyone go in and around the first team but that might not be in my hands.

“I would like to think we’ll carry on as we are.

“We’ve got to give credit for the way we’ve started the season and if we can keep the lads we’ve got, we can build on that.”
