Wilson: '˜Destiny still in our own hands'

The Spireites have tasted victory once in March and are without a win in four games after defeat at a struggling Oldham Athletic side on Bank Holiday Monday.

It saw the Latics, managed by former Chesterfield boss John Sheridan, move level on points with fifth-from-bottom Fleetwood Town.

The disappointment at Boundary Park followed Saturday’s goalless encounter at home with Fleetwood for the Spireites.

Port Vale visit the Proact Stadium this coming weekend before a cluster of local derbies against Barnsley, Sheffield United and Doncaster Rovers to come in April.

“We’ve got seven games left,” said Wilson. “Just because it’s a defeat here doesn’t mean anything’s been decided. We’ve got to go into the next seven games with exactly the same confidence that we’ve had in other games.

“It’s nervy and we know it’s going to be nervy but it’s not going to end four or five games before the end of the season, it’s going to go to the wire.

And added: “The players know what there is to play for and the fans do as well, we’ve got everything to play for and our destiny’s in our own hands at this stage.

“We don’t need to worry about anyone else and we don’t want to get into that situation, so next week we’ve got to get three points.”

Vale, managed by former Spireite player Rob Page, have lost two of their last three and are eight points off the top six going in to the weekend clash.
