Wilson a big admirer of former Spireite turned manager

Former Chesterfield defender Rob Page returns to face his old club on Saturday, and the man he will pit his wits against is a big admirer.

Danny Wilson believes Page’s Port Vale haven’t given up on their hopes of sneaking into the play-offs.

And he’s predicting a big future for their 41-year-old manager, who played 56 times for the Spireites between 2008 and 2011.

Wilson heaped praise on the work Page has done at Vale Park.

“You only have to look at what he’s done this season with Port Vale, quite unfancied at the start of the season, I would have thought the bookies would have had them as one of the favourites to go down,” said Wilson.

“But to be where they are, still in with a chance of top six, Rob has done a remarkable job there.

“It doesn’t surprise me that his name gets tagged along when you see certain jobs floating around.

“He’s a really level headed boy and I think he’ll have a lot of success in his career in front of him.

“Some people take to it like a duck to water and he certainly looks like that.”

It’s still mathematically possible for Port Vale to make the play-offs, so Wilson is preparing his side for another stiff test at the Proact.

He said: “I know Rob well enough to know his character, they will not give up the ghost of the play-offs at the minute.

“There’s enough points for them to get in there.

“We have to prepare for a team that will be very determined against us and we’ve had that many times in recent weeks.

“We won’t presume they’re not up for the game.”
