Wilson and Morgan the right men for the Spireites job says Shinner

A former Chesterfield captain believes the right men are in place at the Proact to take the club back to the League One play-offs.

Shane Nicholson wore the armband for the Spireites in his second spell at the club between 2004 and 2007.

He remained with Chesterfield as a fitness coach after his playing career ended but departed when Dean Saunders’ arrived last summer.

Nicholson admits he didn’t set foot through the door at the Proact for months after his ‘sacking’ but did eventually return to have a look at Chesterfield under Wilson, the man who replaced Saunders.

“I came to Chesterfield last season to watch them against Bury,” he said.

“I didn’t want to come back too soon, you don’t want to seem like a stalker, I left it a little while.

“It’s not nice to come back if they’re losing, it can seem like you’re gloating.”

The former left-back, who has Chesterfield to thank for giving him a way back into the game following treatment for drug and alcohol addiction, enjoyed more success as a Spireites coach than a Spireites player.

And he thinks Wilson can take them back to the right end of the League One table again.

“I think they’ve got the right man in for the job, in Danny Wilson,” he said.

“You’d think he’s going to have a bit of a clear out and then want to bring his own people in.

“But with him and Chris Morgan, why shouldn’t they be thinking about going for the play-offs again?

“The success the club has had over the last few years is something Chesterfield hasn’t seen for a long time.

“With Cook they were spoiled in terms of the football they played and the success they had.

“Hopefully success will be around the corner for them again.”

Nicholson’s testimonial game will see Chesterfield host Derby County on Tuesday 26th July at the Proact with the first teams involved in the first half.
