What Chesterfield captain Will Evans had to say about the job John Pemberton has done

Pemberton, 55, who only lost two of his nine games in charge after being appointed caretaker boss in January, is on a temporary rolling contract and is currently on furlough.

Evans, 28, has been impressed with Pemberton’s methods and the positive atmosphere he has helped create around the club.

“He has come in and it feels like he wants to prove to everyone what he can do and he wants to build something with this club,” Evans told the DT.

“He is a very particular guy in that he knows what he wants and he does what he can to get the best out of everyone.

“So for me it is massive that he is in charge because I feel like he really does genuinely want to succeed and he gives off that persona to everybody else.”

Defender Evans said that he was in a “very bad place” before Pemberton arrived and that he “dreaded” matches because he was so low on confidence.

The centre-half was also honest to admit that before January he did not think they could avoid relegation from the National League.

“I think we were in a worse place this season than we were last season when Martin Allen got sacked,” he said. “I think he (Pemberton) came in at a very difficult time and the transition was remarkable.

“I believe we were dead and buried to be brutally honest. We were down. So full credit to him and full credit to all of the lads because without everyone pulling together it could have been a disaster.”

It is likely to be a while before Pemberton’s future is sorted due to the pandemic which has forced the community trust’s takeover to be delayed and Evans’ own wedding to be postponed until next year.

But all signs point towards Pemberton being in charge next season.

“Every time I have spoken to him he has been speaking as if he is going to be here in pre-season but I don’t know what his contract situation is with him,” Evans added.
