Weston appreciates not having to repeat himself with '˜quick learner' in midfield

The elder statesman of two new boys in the centre of the park, Weston is one of those who can help 21-year-old Carter with his footballing education.

So far he’s been impressed with the young man 10 years his junior, particularly how quick on the uptake he is.

“I like Chas,” he told the Derbyshire Times.

“He learns quickly. I’ve only played a couple of games with him but if you tell him something you’ve only got to tell him once.

“As a young lad sometimes that takes a bit of time.

“He’s taken to his new position, the one he’s been playing in pre-season anyway, pretty quickly.

“He’s going to be good for us moving forward.”

Alongside the likes of Robbie Weir, Sam Wedgbury and Joe Rowley, Weston and Carter will have to fight for places in Town’s new-look midfield.

Weston, who has two promotions on his CV, welcomes the competition.

“I think it’s good if you’re competing for places, which we will be,” he said.

“It’s healthy for a club, especially if we want to keep winning and with our target of going up, that’s going to be important.”
