'We might be able to look forward to matchdays again under James Rowe', says our Chesterfield fan writer

Well it’s good to get off to a winning start with a new manager at the helm, says our Spireites fan writer Roland Gent.

For those of us scratching our heads at the appointment midway through the week, James Rowe was born in Ipswich and was on the books of Luton and Charlton as a youngster and played non- league for Ilkeston Town, Histon, Sudbury, Leiston, Canvey and Leamington.

Rather crucially Rowe then attended the Johann Cruyff Institute in Amsterdam and got a master’s degree in football coaching. I was unaware that such a thing existed but it does sound remarkable in the English game where having loads of contacts, a sheepskin coat and the ability to spout cliches seem the qualifications needed in a manager!

The main thing we’ve discovered is that Rowe seems to favour a pressing game, which takes the pressure off our defence which has looked rather ropey all season, it has to be said.

Many Spireites have expressed the opinion that a pressing game would not be possible with Tom Denton in the side but that’s been put to rest after 90 minutes. Two goals scored again for the third game on the trot, but only one conceded means three crucial points on the board and I would like to hand out a little praise to Haydn Hollis who came into the defence and made things a little tighter at the back doing the basics right.

With games coming thick and fast we could soon be midtable and if the team can play like they did in the second half against Weymouth we might actually look forward to matchdays again.
