Town defender Haydn Hollis headed in debutant George Carline’s long throw six minutes before half-time which turned out to be the winner.

The second-placed hosts had a great chance to equalise after the break but Harry Beautyman fired over from close-range.

“We have lost tonight, I am not happy, but I have got no excuses on anything really other than we just did not take our chances,” Gray said. “We haven’t got what we deserved tonight and it is just one of those nights.

“I was pleased with how we started the game, then the game got a little bit bitty, there were a few set-pieces, corners and throw-ins coming into our box and we couldn’t get ourselves going. They had a good spell, and I’d say probably their only spell for 10-15 minutes before half-time, but then in the second half I felt it was all us really other than a couple of corners that they had. We had a great chance with Harry and a couple of goalmouth scrambles. The ball didn’t quite drop for us in the box.”

Sutton had won three games in a row going into Tuesday night but despite the loss they still remain six points clear of Notts County in third.

“Unfortunately we have been done by a long throw and a set-piece and we have not managed to capitalise on the chances we had at the other end,” Gray added.
