Chesterfield had been favourites for promotion since Christmas, when the arrival of Tony Lormor and Phil Robinson sparked a more attacking style of play.

Unfortunately, that season there were only two automatic promotion places and the Spireites finished third after a rare home defeat in their penultimate home league fixture and then a draw on the last day of the season.

However, that set up a tasty play-off semi-final with their old rivals from across the M1 — Mansfield Town.

The first leg at Field Mill was drawn 1-1 to perfectly set up the second leg at Saltergate.

When the Stags took an early lead, Chesterfield’s dream of Wembley appeared to be diminishing.

But then up stepped Lormor, who ironically would later play for Mansfield.

Lormor, running forward to the edge of the penalty area in anticipation, took the ball in his midrift, turned and fired right-footed across the keeper and into the bottom corner.

The majority of the 8,000-plus crowd celebrated and a rip-roaring game had been ignited. The Spireites went on to win the second leg 5-2 after extra-time as the Stags had two players sent off.

Lormor repeated his goalscoring in the final at Wembley as Chesterfield brushed Bury aside 2-0 to win promotion,

For the striker it was the start of three years at the club, where he scored 35 goals in more than 100 league matches.
