The young American was a target for Stubbs’ former club Hibernian in 2014, but the Edinburgh side delayed making a move and were pipped to his signature by the Spireites.

It is believed Hibs had Ariyibi watched again towards the end of last season, with a view to making him a transfer target should they win promotion to the Scottish Premier.

Reports have now emerged linking Stubbs, who took over at the New York Stadium last week, with the 21-year-old.

Ariyibi’s agent would only confirm to the Derbyshire Times that they are in talks with Chesterfield over a new, extended deal.

His current contract runs out at the end of next season.

Last season Ariyibi set out to play more regular football and did so, making 41 appearances.

At times he looked unplayable in League One and was involved in 10 goals, scoring three of those himself.

Chesterfield assistant manager Chris Morgan revealed that the club’s coaching staff were working hard with the player to develop the defensive side of his game.
