The centre-half, on loan from Premier League side Burnley, scored the first goal of his professional career to salvage a point against Gillingham on Tuesday.

Town’s resilience will stand them in good stead, according to the 23-year-old.

“We dug deep, showed great character as a team to not give up,” he said.

“That’s what you get when you keep persisting, you keep attacking, you keep believing in yourself and that’s what we’ve got to do.

“We showed we’re still together and we’ll fight to the very end.”

Aside from goalkeeper Lloyd Allinson, there won’t have been many more unlikely sources of a goal than Anderson.

Describing the moment when he finally broke his Spireites duck and found the net, Anderson spoke like a 20-goal a season striker.

“I just thought, it’s fallen to me, keep your eye on the ball and try and put it in the back of the net and luckily I did that,” he said.

“If you’re in the right position you’ve got to have a bit of composure and put it away and like I said, luckily I did that.”

Having picked up an important point on the road, Anderson believes that continuing to carry out the manager’s instructions will bring that vital rise up the League One table.

“We’ll dig deep, stay together and do our best to get winning and get a run going and we’ll see how it goes.

“We’ve got a great squad, a great set of lads.

“The gaffer knows what he wants, we know what he wants, we’ve got to start doing that on Saturdays and Tuesdays and climb that league.”

And the fans, like the 90-odd who made the arduous trek to Kent on Tuesday night, have their part to play too.

“Great dedication,” said Anderson of the travelling support.

“All we can say is keep coming, keep supporting us.

“It’s brilliant for us, that’s what we need and hopefully we can give them something back by winning games.”
