Sports get off to flying start in their Shield clash

The Manor Pharmacy Matlock & District football league saw some teams taking part in the Invitation Shield last weekend and it was Matlock Sports who made a fantastic start as Callam Lytham scored in the opening three minutes from a tight angle to give Sports a one-goal lead against Afc Lea Holloway.

Holloway showed their intent and hit back straight away, scoring an equaliser just two minutes later.

But it was Matlock who took the game by the scruff of the neck and started bossing things. Sports started playing with flair and ambition and it was playmaker Ben Harrison’s twisting and turning which provided Craig Walters with a fine ball on the left touchline. He looked up and inch -perfectly lobbed the keeper to score a stunning goal and give Sports a 2-1 lead after 17 minutes.

With more pressing football and some silky skills Sports fired home a third just before half time, Tom Evans hitting home with a superb headed goal after a Lytham cross.

The second half saw Holloway come out with the bit between their teeth.

After just two minutes, that grit determination paid off when a Holloway forced a rare error in the Matlock reargaurd who gave away a needless penalty. Gareth Lewin duely slotted home, giving Holloway a sense of hope.

Matlock regrouped, with Harrison and Tom Evans taking control of the midfield battle and Curtis Birchall and Jack Johnson dealt with anything the home side had to offer down the wings.

With Holloway feeling the pressure, Matlock took full advantage and scored two quick goals to kill off any Holloway fightback. The fourth goal came from Callam on 80 minutes, with Talbot scoring the fifth. Matlock will now take on local rivals Hurst Farm Utd in the quater-finals.

Shirland MW FC failed to win their semi-final Cavendish Cup game against Chesterfield Town at the weekend after fielding a side missing six first team players.

Chesterfield won the game 5-1 and fully deserve to be in the final against Hopflower FC.

This will be played on Bank Holiday May Day Monday at Matlock Town’s football ground with a kick-off time of 7.30pm.
