Spireites: Wilson feeling pressure but enjoying it

The Chesterfield boss leads his men into another basement clash tonight at the Proact, as fellow strugglers Blackpool visit.

Wilson’s men are unbeaten in three, and while he admits the results have done little to reduce the stress his job induces, he’s coping just fine.

“You feel pressure from the first game to the 46th game, it’s how you manage it,” he said.

“I think the lads manage it great.

“I enjoy this situation, it doesn’t bother me in the slightest because if we do our jobs right, generally we’ll get results and we’ll be fine.”

Other managers of clubs in the bottom half of the table might be nervously looking over their shoulder as Spireites pick up results, and Wilson welcomes that.

He said: “The more the merrier.

“The teams starting to come into the equation now, it might be a surprise to them. Whether or not they can react to it we’ll have to wait and see.

“But we’ve known we’ve been in it for a while, we make no bones about it.

“We know that’s what we’re in, but we came to terms with it quite a few games ago.

“Teams that all of a sudden it’s sprung on them, dropping points, they might find it difficult to turn it around.”

Tonight presents another chance to reward the Spireites fans for their support, and Wilson has reiterated his message that the remaining home games are key to League One survival.

“If we win our games at home we’ll stay up, that’s a fact.

“But we want to get better in every game. The bottom line is that we need to stay up and home form will be paramount to us.

“There’s nothing better than getting the fans behind you, those who came down to Gillingham it was fantastic from that point of view.

“We do understand the importance of the fans and how they can get behind us can win games.

“I hope we can carry on where we left off, that would be perfect for us.”

And it’s not just a bit of form that Chesterfield take into tonight’s encounter, it’s the sky high morale that positive results breed.

“Confidence is everything in football,” said Wilson.

“I said that when I first came in that we had to instill some confidence in the players, and they look confident.

“The way they defended for each other (on Saturday) showed massive respect for each other.

“They put the bodies on the line for each other, and that’s team ethic.

“It’s very important that the respect is transmitted throughout the squad, not just the 11 who played.

“Everyone has done the job they’ve been asked to do.”
