The midfielder, 24, joined League One rivals Wigan Athletic last night for an undisclosed fee with his contract set to expire at the Proact Stadium at the end of the season.

Morsy made more than 100 appearances for the Spireites over a two-and-a-half year stay which brought a League Two title win and a trip to Wembley in the JP Trophy in his first year.

He took on the armband last season and captained Chesterfield to a top six spot in League One where they would be beaten play-off semi-finalists to Preston North End.

“Chesterfield have done really well by me as well. It was a fantastic two-and-a-half years there for me, we achieved a lot of success together,” he told Wigan’s official club website.

“Two-and-a-half years in football feels like a lifetime in football and this was a great opportunity for me to move on with great memories from my time with the club in part of a very successful period in their history.”
