Hunt was one of eight ‘Boys of ‘66’ whose career highlight was unquestionably playing against Chesterfield in first-class competitions, and he was the only one to score at Saltergate, a feat he achieved in his club’s 2-1 defeat at Chesterfield that season.

Gordon Banks of course started with Chesterfield but saved his only game against us for Stoke, in the 1971-2 FA Cup, at The Victoria Ground.

George Cohen spent his entire career with Fulham and did not play against the Blues.

Geoff Hurst and Bobby Moore didn’t, either, although Moore came here as Southend’s manager in the 1984-5 season.

That encounter is remembered by children queuing at the club shop door for the colourful assessment he gave of his team’s performance that day, heard through the open windows of the away dressing room.
