Remember Caolan Lavery? Remember his dramatic, late winner at MK Dons?
If so, you’ll love this second in our series of memorable pictures taken by Derbyshire Times photographer James Williamson from his time covering Chesterfield up and down the country.
Lavery, a 22-year-old Canadian, was on loan from Sheffield Wednesday as the Spireites made the League One trip to promotion-chasing MK Dons in March earlier this year.
Dons took a 28th minute lead when another former Wednesday loanee, Lewis Baker, drilled home from 20 yards. But Gary Roberts equalised on 66 before the home side were reduced to ten men when their captain, Dean Lewington, was sent off.
It looked odds-on a draw until Lavery struck in the dying seconds to clinch a 2-1 victory and send the travelling Chesterfield fans wild with delight.
Says James: “On a freezing night, maybe Chesterfield got lucky with MK down to ten men. But Lavery popped up with a late winner, and who doesn’t like a late winner away from home?
“Lavery was a fantastic player who, unfortunately, got recalled by Sheffield Wednesday soon afterwards.”
In fact, the Canadian played only eight times for Paul Cook’s side, scoring three goals, before returning to Hillsborough. He has since been reunited with Cook and is currently on loan at his new club, Portsmouth, in League Two.
