‘Super’ Kevin Davies played alongside Scott Wiseman in Preston North End’s 2014/15 promotion season, which came somewhat ironically at the expense of Chesterfield in the League One play-off semi-finals.

Davies, who began his career at Saltergate and helped Town to a famous FA Cup semi-final, recalls a team-mate who wasn’t shy about giving his opinion.

“He’s a good lad, a family man who was good around the dressing room,” said Davies.

“He had a good balance between having a crack and if something needs saying he’s not afraid to say it.

“Good character.”

Wiseman had a few injury problems at Preston but still managed 30 appearances in the season that saw them win promotion to the Championship.

Davies was particularly impressed with the defender’s pace.

“When he was fit and having a run of games he was a really good player,” he said.

“Very quick, doing some of the testing, no one could get near him in the sprint drills.

“He was rapid, covered the ground really well, a fit lad with good stamina.

“One of the quickest I’ve seen.”

The man who retired following the 2014/15 campaign, having amassed 150 career goals in 820 appearances and one England cap, believes Wiseman is a good signing for the Spireites..

Davies highlights the 31-year-old’s international experience as something that weighs in the new Spireite’s favour.

“He knows the leagues very well, he has lots of experience and has played some big games for Gibraltar,” said Davies.

“He’s still young, has plenty of life left in him.

“I’d see him as a good signing.”
