The man responsible for gathering information and targets to allow first team boss Gary Caldwell to rebuild the Spireites squad for a new season in League Two, says there are plenty of irons in the fire.

But already they’ve identified five indiviuals they think fit the mould and have put offers to them.

“I’ve offered player on player to Gary,” he said.

“We’ve got a few irons in the fire and it’s about getting the right sorts in early and working through the summer to get the right sorts ready so we can still bring a few in during pre-season.

“We’ve made official offers to five very, very good players, in our eyes.”

The five targets are now all at different stages of their own decision making process as they weigh up a move to the Proact.

Branston said: “There’s a sense that one or two are waiting.

“One is there or thereabouts, not a million miles away.

“The other two I think will be the longterm.

“But we’ll be offering more as we go along and picking up the pieces.

“We’re getting to a feeling where we know the numbers we’re looking at, squad size.

“We’re making tweaks every day and getting there.”

Although Chesterfield have stated they want to get their summer business underway nice and early, Branston also urges caution.

He believes it’s vital to keep focused on what it is the club need, specifically, from any new players.

“It’s a slow process,” he said.

“We don’t want to get caught in the mad rush at the start of the summer because agents are rubbing their hands.

“We want to make sure we’re getting good value for the club and making the right appointments in the right spaces.

“We’ve got to fill certain slots and it’s about understanding those slots, every day.

“We’ve still got lads offered contracts who were here last year, we’ve got lads who are still here under contract and slots that we need to fill.

“Someone might turn a contract down elsewhere, he might fill that slot here, an academy man might step up and fill a slot and there’s various different wage brackets we’re offering as well.”
