The Spireites, who continue their pre-season preparations in Hungary this weekend, have two open slots for goalkeepers.

Back up Aaron Chapman was released at the end of last season with the club keen to sign a replacement who could offer more competition for regular number one Tommy Lee.

But Lee has recently had to go under the knife to correct a shoulder issue and will miss the start of the season, leaving the club in need of a second signing between the posts.

One custodian said to be in the frame was Sam Slocombe, who is free to leave Oxford United.

The 28-year-old spent seven years with Scunthorpe United before his move to the Kassam Stadium last summer.

He made 28 appearances for The U’s last season but only seven of those came after the turn of the year.

Despite having 12 months left on his contract Slocombe has been told he can leave the club.

The Star understands the Spireites have had a conversation about the player, but there currently isn’t a deal on offer at the Proact.

Chesterfield’s new goalkeeping coach Matt Duke admits being thrown into the ongoing recruitment process is a real test.

“There are a lot of things going on, we have a few lads on trial at the moment and there’s always names being touted around,” he said.

“It is a little bit difficult, but it it is a challenge and it’s something nice as I’m not coming into a situation where it’s all in place.

“I can have my opinions on stuff and while it’s a challenge it’s something that I’m looking forward to sorting.

“It also adds to my experience which might come in helpful later on.”
