Concern swelled when Chesterfield director Ashley Carson took to the fans’ main message board to address speculation regarding the future of captain Sam Morsy.

The midfielder is believed to have conducted a farewell speech to guests at the Proact when collecting his man of the match award after the Millwall defeat on Saturday.

And, with the rumour mill in full motion, Carson firstly denied the club had accepted an offer for Morsy before re-joining the debate on the popular Bob’s Board.

He posted: “We are not a club in a position to just throw away a significant sum to keep him for the next few months.

“Great player and will be a great loss, but business is business and when we run out of money at the end of the month, how many of you will have a whip round to pay the clubs wages, approx £200,000 every month.”

It caused some distress among supporters, with fears over the club’s financial well-being and immediate future.

Turner told the Derbyshire Times: “Due partly to the historical debt associated with the stadium move, we have to keep a tight rein on finances, but supporters can be assured that the future of the club is not under threat.”

The club did not wish to comment further.
