Spireites boss Wilson lauds Sheridan after Hall of Fame induction

Danny Wilson was invited on stage as John Sheridan was inducted to the event’s Hall of Fame.

The management teams and players from Sheffield’s big two clubs, Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Chesterfield were all in attendance, along with the likes of FA chairman Greg Dyke and special guest Sir Geoff Hurst.

Footage of Sheridan’s famous 1991 League Cup final goal for the Owls against Manchester United was shown before his award was presented.

Sheridan admits it’s a moment that still lives with him.

“It doesn’t feel like 25 years ago, it’s gone ever so quick,” he said.

“It’s fresh in my mind, it was a great day for the club and the supporters and team. Scoring the winning goal was a big bonus for me but it was all about the team on the day.”

Wilson was one of the Wednesday players who lined up alongside Sheridan that day.

Asked what it was like to play with the midfielder, he said: “Easy. You just get the ball and give it to him.

“Of all the players I’ve played with in my career and the ones I’ve managed as well, he’s a cut above all the rest of them. Fantastic.

“You saw only a glimpse of his skill for that goal.

“Get the ball give it him and he does a bit of magic with it.

“He’s given a lot of people at Sheffield Wednesday great pleasure over the years and it was a privilege to play with him.”

Sheridan, who made over 200 appearances for Leeds United and 199 for Wednesday as a player, became Chesterfield manager in 2009.

In the 2010/11 season he guided them to promotion to League One, as champions, and claimed the Football League Trophy the following season, when Chesterfield dropped straight back down to League Two.
